The Southwest Florida Graduate Chapter of Phi Gamma Delta was Chartered on February 23, 1987. Edward A. More (Missouri '39), with the assistance of Phi Gamma Delta International Headquarters in Lexington, KY, sent letters to 252 brothers living between Punta Gorda and Marco Island, Florida inviting them to an organizational luncheon at the Forest Country Club. 27 brothers representing 19 colleges and universities attended the first meeting, all of which became Charter members. At that meeting, Edward A. More was elected our first President, Art Swetland (Ohio Wesleyan '51) Vice President, Hal Laughlin (DePaw '24) Treasurer, and John Sharrer (Wittenberg '36) Secretary.
Due to the seasonal nature of the area, we organize formal events throughout the tri-county region in the winter months, ie, between November and April. In addition to breakfasts and lunches, we coordinate a local outing, a spring training baseball game, a Holiday Party, and of course, our Norris Pig Dinner.
We are proud to have won the Brightman Award as the most outstanding Graduate Chapter (less than 75 members) in 7 of the past 13 years including 2022...and plan to add to that record! The Graduate Chapter also sponsors a Scholarship Fund which awards deserving Fiji undergraduates attending Florida colleges and universities. We look forward to you joining us and demonstrating once again that the brotherhood of Phi Gamma Delta is NOT FOR COLLEGE DAYS ALONE!
